Sustainable or Regenerative Cheesemaking

Sustainable or Regenerative Cheesemaking

Sustainability in cheesemaking is about more than packaging or marketing buzzwords. It is about creating food in a way that supports the land, animals, and future generations.

Many artisan and farmstead cheesemakers use practices designed to reduce waste and improve soil health. Rotational grazing allows pasture to recover naturally, while diverse forage systems encourage stronger ecosystems.

Regenerative farming goes a step further by actively improving the land over time. Healthy soil stores more water, supports biodiversity, and creates stronger pasture for grazing animals.

Smaller creameries often focus on local distribution as well, reducing transportation distance and supporting nearby communities. Some producers also reuse whey byproducts for livestock feed or other food products to minimize waste.

Sustainable cheesemaking does not mean sacrificing quality. In fact, many cheesemakers believe healthier land and healthier animals create better milk and better cheese.

Choosing artisan cheese from thoughtful producers supports a food system built around quality, care, and long-term stewardship.
