How to Store Cheese Properly

If there is one thing we tell people at the market over and over, it is this, cheese likes to breathe. Storing cheese properly is the difference between a beautiful, flavorful wedge and something that dries out or turns too quickly.

The biggest mistake people make is wrapping cheese in tight plastic. Cheese is alive, and when it cannot breathe, it traps moisture and develops off flavors. Instead, start with wax paper or parchment paper, then loosely wrap it in plastic or place it in a container. This keeps the right balance of humidity and airflow.

Different cheeses need slightly different care. Soft cheeses like brie or chèvre should be kept in the vegetable drawer where humidity is higher. Hard cheeses like cheddar or gouda are more forgiving but still benefit from proper wrapping.

Temperature matters too. Cheese prefers a consistent, cool environment, not the coldest part of your fridge. Avoid storing cheese near the freezer or in places where temperatures fluctuate.

When stored correctly, artisan cheese can last longer and taste better every time you come back to it. Treat it well, and it will reward you with flavor right down to the last bite.
