How to Ship Cheese Safely

Sending cheese through the mail might sound risky, but with the right preparation, artisan cheese ships remarkably well. In fact, many of your favorite specialty cheeses travel across the country every single day.

The first step is choosing cheeses that travel well. Hard and semi-hard cheeses like cheddar, gouda, alpine-style cheeses, and aged sheep's milk cheeses are excellent choices. Soft cheeses can also be shipped successfully, but they require a little more attention to temperature.

Quality cheese should always be packed with insulated materials and cold packs to help maintain a safe temperature during transit. During warmer months, many specialty cheese companies adjust shipping schedules so packages spend as little time as possible sitting in warehouses or delivery trucks.

When your cheese arrives, unpack it promptly and place it in the refrigerator. If the ice packs have thawed but the cheese is still cool to the touch, it is typically perfectly safe. Cheese is more resilient than many people realize.

At The Cheese People, we carefully package every shipment so your cheese arrives in excellent condition, whether it is headed across the state or across the country.

Great cheese deserves a great journey.
